The book "Deep Survival" covers this kind of thing.  Good reading. It has helped me grow a bit.

That was before Andrew, when Florida changed the building codes.  All my friends that live in Florida who have been there more than 10 years have either storm shutters or pre cut plywood covers for their windows.  They also have food and water, most have chainsaws, and a lot have their own generator.  Of course, none of them live in major cities, either.
